Children's week at the House

28 Oct 2021

This week is Children’s Week, a national celebration of children’s rights, talents and citizenship. It highlights the importance of all young people and encourages children to participate and contribute to the society in which they live and to exercise their rights.

Each year the theme is based on one of the rights from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The Theme for 2021 is UNCRC Article 15 – ‘Children have the right to meet together and to join groups and organisations, as long as this does not stop other people from enjoying their rights.” This includes being free to meet friends, set up or join an organisation, take part in peaceful protest, come together to discuss the issues that affect their lives.
Children’s Week 2021 is a wonderful opportunity to promote the rights of children and young people and to celebrate their capacity to actively contribute to the world around them.

To celebrate Children’s Week in the House this week we are playing games and doing challenges to encourage each other to find things in common and to develop friendships.

We are having discussions about what clubs and groups we are part of in our community, such as Little Athletics, soccer, Girl Guides, Scouts, Surf Lifesaving and look at the different groups that children can join.

We are talking about how to make a difference in society by following what we are passionate about, helping other people and creating a happy community.

Some of our challenges include designing the tallest toothpick towers, basketball and soccer shootouts, egg and spoon races and ring toss.
