Give volunteering a go in 2022

15 Nov 2021

Have you ever thought about volunteering? With the new year approaching fast, you could add volunteering at RMHC Sydney to your new year’s resolutions.

Our volunteers are the Heart of our House & Family Rooms. They provide a welcoming and comfortable environment to our Families, ensuring they feel supported at all times whether that be in the day, evening or at weekends.

Phoebe has been volunteering at RMHC Sydney for over three years, covering several roles, from volunteering in the Family Room at the Sydney Children’s Hospital and more recently taking our therapy dog Wilbur for long walks.

“I started volunteering with RMHC Sydney in 2018 after deciding I wanted to find a way to help the community more regularly.

I’ve primarily worked in the Family Room at the Sydney Children’s Hospital where I get to welcome families and kids to a safe space away from the wards, where they can take a break, have a cuppa, sneak in some homemade cake and play with toy cars (and that’s just the adults!).

More recently, I’ve had the absolute privilege of being a PawPal for the wonderful Wilbur, the House therapy dog. Wilbur and I meet up once a week or so, and I take him for a stroll around the neighbourhood to stretch his legs and get some energy out in between cuddles with our families at the House. He’s a beautiful boy and I know he brings a lot of joy to the house!”

Phoebe has had a super positive experience volunteering for us and has no doubts in recommending RMHC as a great place to volunteer for.

“I’d encourage anyone thinking of volunteering with RMHC to give it a go - there’s a lot of opportunities that can work around your work and life, and it’s fantastic to help these kids and their families in some small way that can have a big impact.”

These are the roles we’ll be needing the most in 2022:

  • Dream Team Volunteers: they’re on duty between 9pm-8am on Friday or Saturday and are the main point of contact for families during this time.

  • Volunteers for the Family Rooms in Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney Children's Hospital, or the Wollongong Hospital: the Family Rooms provide an opportunity for Families to step away from the Ward environment to have a shower, enjoy a snack or beverage and relax in a quiet peaceful setting, with the support of our Volunteers.
